The Heart Behind My Work
Why veterinary communication means so much to me
Teachers who believed in my writing and speaking skills set me on the path to a career in communication. My high school journalism teacher, Chris McMenemy, was the first to spark that passion. I can still hear the clang of the Royal typewriter keys as I pounded out stories for the school newspaper and yearbook. Later, in college, my communications professor, Dr. David L. Eshelman, pushed me further. He challenged me with news assignments for the campus TV station and newspaper, and he taught me the value of curiosity and truly listening. He also nudged me into the Society of Professional Journalists—an organization I would eventually lead as national president.
My shift into the veterinary profession came at just the right moment. By the mid-1990s, women made up 80% of veterinary school enrollments, and I entered the field as editor-in-chief of Veterinary Economics after running a magazine for women entrepreneurs. Traveling to meet “Practice of Excellence” winners and telling their stories gave me a front-row seat to what makes veterinary hospitals thrive. I worked alongside remarkable leaders on our editorial advisory board and was proud to welcome the board’s first female voices. Their encouragement helped me take the leap into founding Communication Solutions for Veterinarians—moving from writing about best practices to coaching teams on how to bring them to life.
For more than 30 years, I’ve loved helping veterinary teams communicate with clarity, build client trust, and elevate patient care.
Guiding others to communicate with confidence—whether through my online courses, conference sessions, or onsite consulting—continues to energize me.
My experience as a partner in an AAHA-accredited specialty and emergency hospital gave me a deep appreciation for the challenges practice owners and managers face every day. By strengthening communication skills across teams, I hope to inspire excellence in both client service and patient outcomes.
Let’s work together to grow your team’s communication skills—and spark the same passion my teachers inspired in me.
